May 10, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there, opposite the tomb.” – Matthew 27:61 (NIV)

“Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where he was laid.” – Mark 15:47 (NIV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

Matthew 27:61 and Mark 15:47 both highlight the presence of Mary Magdalene (along with other women) at the burial of Jesus. In Matthew, they are “sitting there, opposite the tomb,” and in Mark, they “saw where he was laid.” These verses emphasize their unwavering devotion and their desire to remain close to Jesus, even in death. Their presence at the burial is a testament to their love, their grief, and their determination to honor Him, even in the face of despair.

As a disciple, you may face times when you feel overwhelmed by grief, loss, or disappointment. You may be tempted to give up hope or to turn away from God. Mary Magdalene’s example reminds you that it’s okay to grieve, to mourn, and to acknowledge your pain. It also encourages you to remain steadfast in your faith, even when you don’t understand what God is doing. Your presence, your prayers, and your faithfulness can be a powerful witness to God’s love and grace, even in the midst of sorrow.

This week, if you are grieving a loss or experiencing a difficult time, allow yourself to feel your emotions and to process your pain. Reach out to trusted friends or family members for support. Remember that God is with you, even in your sorrow, and that He will never leave you nor forsake you.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I acknowledge my pain and my sorrow. Help me to trust in your love and your faithfulness, even when I don’t understand what you are doing. Surround me with people who will support me and comfort me in my grief. Give me the strength to remain steadfast in my faith, even in the midst of despair. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
