Redirecting Our Focus to Humility in God’s Plan

March 6, 2025

By Andrew Williams

Acts 10:24-27 (NLT)  “They arrived in Caesarea the following day. Cornelius was waiting for them and had called together his relatives and close friends. As Peter entered his home, Cornelius fell at his feet and worshiped him. But Peter pulled him up and said, ‘Stand up! I’m a human being just like you!’ So they talked together and went inside, where many others were assembled.”

Good morning fellow disciples.

In this passage, we see a beautiful intersection of humility and openness. Cornelius, a Gentile centurion, eagerly welcomes Peter into his home with great reverence, even falling at Peter’s feet in a gesture of worship. However, Peter, understanding his role as a servant of God and not someone to be glorified, immediately redirects Cornelius’ focus, reminding him that he is just a man. Peter’s humility is a reflection of his understanding that all glory belongs to God, not to him. This interaction sets the stage for a deeper revelation: that God’s salvation is for all people, and Peter is simply the messenger of that truth.

Peter’s humility and Cornelius’ openness remind us of the posture we need as disciples. Peter could have allowed Cornelius’ reverence to elevate his pride, but instead, he pointed everything back to God. Likewise, Cornelius shows us the eagerness we should have to hear God’s message, gathering others and preparing his heart for what’s to come. As disciples, we are empowered to redirect our focus from seeking glory for ourselves to directing others toward God. And like Cornelius, we are called to cultivate a heart that is ready to receive and share God’s truth.

This week, reflect on how you respond when others praise or admire you for your work, skills, or faith. Are you quick to redirect the glory back to God? Commit to practicing humility in your interactions, pointing others to Christ rather than yourself. Additionally, follow Cornelius’ example by inviting others into a space where they can encounter God—whether that’s a conversation, a prayer group, or a church service. Redirect your focus to God’s plan and allow Him to work through your humility and openness.

Prayer: Father God, thank You for the example of Peter and Cornelius, who remind me of the importance of humility and eagerness in Your plan. Forgive me for the times I’ve sought recognition for myself instead of pointing others to You. Help me to redirect my focus to Your glory, always remembering that I am simply a servant in Your hands. Open my heart to receive Your truth and to invite others to experience Your love and grace. Use me, Lord, to bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
