Obedience in Uncertainty

March 4, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“Peter was very perplexed. What could the vision mean? Just then the men sent by Cornelius found Simon’s house. Standing outside the gate, they asked if a man named Simon Peter was staying there. Meanwhile, as Peter was puzzling over the vision, the Holy Spirit said to him, ‘Three men have come looking for you. Get up, go downstairs, and go with them without hesitation. Don’t worry, for I have sent them.’ So Peter went down and said, ‘I’m the man you are looking for. Why have you come?'” Acts 10:17-21 (NLT)

Good morning fellow disciples.

This passage highlights Peter’s confusion after receiving a vision from God. He didn’t yet understand the full meaning of what he had seen, but while he was still pondering, God began to orchestrate the next step in His plan. The men sent by Cornelius arrive, and the Holy Spirit speaks clearly to Peter, calling him to respond in obedience even though he doesn’t yet have all the answers.

Peter’s willingness to act in faith and trust the Spirit’s guidance is a powerful example of obedience in the face of uncertainty. God often reveals His plans to us in steps, not all at once, requiring us to take each step in faith. This passage reminds us that God is always at work, even in the moments when we don’t fully understand His purposes.

Peter’s journey in this story empowers us to be obedient even when we feel perplexed or uncertain about what God is doing. Peter didn’t have all the details about why the men had come or what awaited him, but he trusted God’s voice and took the next step. His faithfulness teaches us the importance of surrendering our need for clarity and trusting in God’s timing and direction.

Peter’s example shows us that obedience is not about having everything figured out—it’s about listening to God’s voice and saying “yes” to His call, one step at a time. It also reminds us that the Holy Spirit is our guide, speaking to us and providing the courage we need to walk in faith.

Are you facing a situation where you feel uncertain about God’s plan? Redirect your focus from needing all the answers to trusting God’s voice and taking the next step. Like Peter, be willing to act in faith, knowing that God is faithful, and His plans are always for your good and His glory.

Spend time in prayer asking the Holy Spirit for clarity and guidance in any area of your life where you feel uncertain. Listen for His voice and take one step of obedience today, even if you don’t yet see the full picture. Trust that God is leading you and that He will reveal the next step in His perfect timing.

Prayer: Father God, I thank You for the example of Peter, who trusted You even when he didn’t fully understand Your plan. Help me to redirect my focus to trusting in Your voice and being obedient to Your call. Teach me to walk in faith, knowing that You are guiding me every step of the way. I surrender my need for control and clarity, and I trust that You are working all things for Your glory and my good. Give me the courage to say “yes” to You, even in uncertainty. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
