Divine Encounter- Jesus’ Gracious Response to Thomas’ Doubt

May 4, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!”” – John 20:26 (NIV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

John 20:26 beautifully illustrates the incredible grace and intentionality of Jesus. A week after Thomas voiced his doubts about the resurrection, Jesus reappears to the disciples. Significantly, the text notes, “and Thomas was with them.” Jesus makes a point to meet Thomas where he is, in the midst of his doubt, demonstrating that He doesn’t abandon those who struggle. Despite the locked doors (symbolizing fear and uncertainty), Jesus miraculously appears among them, offering His characteristic greeting of peace. This verse underscores Jesus’ understanding of human frailty and His unwavering commitment to reaching those who are questioning and uncertain.

As a disciple, you may have friends or family members who struggle with doubt, skepticism, or disbelief. You may feel tempted to judge them, to distance yourself from them, or to give up on them altogether. Jesus’ example reminds you to approach those who doubt with compassion, understanding, and a willingness to meet them where they are. You are empowered to be a source of hope, encouragement, and grace to those who are struggling with their faith.

This week, identify someone in your life who may be struggling with doubt or disbelief. Reach out to them with compassion and understanding. Offer a listening ear, a word of encouragement, or a simple gesture of kindness. Be patient and trust that God is at work in their life, even if you cannot see the results.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to approach those who doubt with compassion and understanding. Give me the wisdom to know how to best support them and to be a source of hope and encouragement in their lives. Remind me of Your unwavering love and Your commitment to reaching those who are struggling with their faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
