Week 40: Prophets in the Book of Acts
Anchor Scripture: “Then one of them, named Agabus, stood up and showed by the Spirit that there was going to be a great famine throughout all the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius Caesar. Then the disciples, each according to his ability, determined to send relief to the brethren dwelling in Judea.” — Acts 11:28–29 (NKJV)
The Teaching
As we move into the book of Acts, we see how the prophetic office functioned in the first generation of the Church. We begin with Agabus. He represents the Prophet of Practical Provision. Agabus received a revelation about a future global crisis—a famine. But notice the purpose of the prophecy: it wasn’t given to cause panic, but to mobilize relief.
This is a hallmark of the New Testament prophet: Functional Revelation. In the Old Testament, a famine was often a judgment for sin. But in the New Covenant, Agabus’ prophecy was a “Head’s Up” from a loving Father to His children. It allowed the Church to be proactive rather than reactive. Because they heard the “Word beforehand” (Day 288), the disciples were able to organize their finances and save lives before the crisis even hit.
To follow the Agabus model is to realize that your “sight” has a Practical Application. You aren’t just seeing things to look “mystical” or “impressive.” You are seeing things so that the Body of Christ can be Strategically Prepared. Whether it is a financial shift, a health crisis, or a logistical move, your job is to provide the “Information for Implementation.”
Prophetic Insight
Maturity is moving from “What is God saying?” to “What is the Body doing?” If your prophetic words don’t lead to a “Relief Plan,” they are likely incomplete. A true Agabus-type prophet provides the “Lead Time” for the Apostle (the builder) to act. If you see a “famine” coming (in a marriage, a business, or a nation), you must deliver the word with a “Solution-Mindset.” Don’t just announce the bad news; announce the opportunity to prepare. Your authority is found in your ability to protect the vulnerable. The success of an Agabus word is not measured by the “accuracy of the famine,” but by the “Abundance of the Relief” that follows.
The Activation
Identify a “Warning” or a “Sensitivity” you’ve been feeling about a future difficulty—perhaps a financial tighten-up or a busy season that will drain your energy. Today, perform an act of Agabus Preparation. Instead of just praying about it, take one Practical Step to prepare. Set aside some money, adjust your schedule, or gather resources. Say to the Lord: “I receive the warning, and I choose to prepare the relief. I will not be a victim of the famine; I will be a provider for the brethren.”
Daily Prayer: Lord God, I thank You that You are a Provider for Your people. I ask for the Agabus anointing to see and prepare for the future. Forgive me for being spiritually lazy or for only using my gift for ‘feel-good’ messages. Give me the foresight to see the ‘famines’ approaching. Help me to use my voice to mobilize Your Church for practical service and protection. Let my sight result in the survival of many. Amen.
