Series: The Year of the Prophet- Month 10: The New Testament Prophet & Christ
Week 38: The Forerunner (John the Baptist)
Anchor Scripture: “For Herod had laid hold of John and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife. Because John had said to him, ‘It is not lawful for you to have her.’” — Matthew 14:3–4 (NKJV)
The Teaching
We conclude our look at the “Bridge” prophet with the sobering reality of the Prophetic Price Tag. John the Baptist’s ministry did not end with a retirement party or a “hall of fame” induction. It ended in a dark dungeon with an executioner’s sword. The “Cost of Truth” for John was his literal head.
Why was John killed? Not because he predicted the future, but because he confronted a King about his morality. He spoke the “Plumb Line” (Day 23) to power. He dared to say, “It is not lawful.” In every generation, the world and the “system” (Day 282) will tolerate a prophet as long as the prophet stays in the realm of “dreams” and “encouragement.” But the moment a prophet addresses The Law of God in the face of The Lust of Man, the persecution begins.
The story of John’s martyrdom teaches us that the prophetic office is a High-Risk Assignment. You are called to speak the truth even when the truth is “un-marketable,” “un-popular,” and “dangerous.” To be a prophet is to value the Voice of God more than your own Survival. John’s death was not a failure of his ministry; it was the ultimate “Seal of Fidelity.” He was faithful to the Word until the very end.
Prophetic Insight
Maturity means you have “Settled the Price.” If you are still trying to figure out how to be a prophet while keeping everyone happy, you will eventually betray the Word. You must reach a point where you realize that being “cast into prison” (silenced, rejected, or marginalized) for the sake of Truth is a greater honor than being “invited to the palace” for the sake of a lie. The “Prophet’s Reward” (Day 29) often arrives in the next life, not this one. Do not be surprised when your “uncompromising sound” triggers the anger of the “Herods” and “Herodiases” in your sphere. Their “Sword” can take your reputation, but it can never touch the Glory of your Mandate. You are a citizen of another Kingdom; act like you have nothing to lose.
The Activation
Identify a “Hard Truth” you have been holding back because you are afraid of the cost—the loss of a job, a friendship, or a reputation. Today, Count the Cost. Ask yourself: “Is my comfort worth more than my calling?” If you are ready, speak that truth today—not with anger, but with the steady, quiet authority of a person who is already “dead” to self (Day 83).
Daily Prayer: Lord Jesus, I thank You that You were the Faithful Witness even unto death. I ask for the courage to pay the ‘Cost of Truth.’ Forgive me for being a coward and for valuing my safety more than Your Word. I choose today to be an uncompromising voice. Use me to say what must be said, regardless of the consequences. I entrust my life, my reputation, and my future into Your hands. I am Your messenger, even unto the end. Amen.
