Series: The Year of the Prophet- Month 10: The New Testament Prophet & Christ
Week 38: The Forerunner (John the Baptist)
Anchor Scripture:“But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, ‘Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not think to say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our father.” For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees.’” — Matthew 3:7–10 (NKJV)
The Teaching
One of the most dangerous assignments of the Forerunner is the Confrontation of the Religious System. When John the Baptist saw the Pharisees and Sadducees—the theological and political elite of his day—he didn’t use “seeker-friendly” language. He called them a “brood of vipers.” He saw through their religious masks and identified the “poison” of hypocrisy and entitlement that was hiding underneath.
The religious system of John’s day was built on Lineage and Tradition. They believed they were safe because they could point to their father, Abraham. They relied on their “pedigree” rather than their “posture.” But the Prophet announced a new economy: The Economy of Fruit. God is not impressed by who your “spiritual father” is or what “denomination” you belong to; He is looking for “fruits worthy of repentance.”
John declared that the “ax is laid to the root.” This is the ultimate “Rooting Out” (Day 124) of the Jeremiah Mandate. The Prophet is sent to chop down the tree of “Empty Religion” to make room for the “Kingdom of Reality.” If a system is not producing the nature of Christ, the Prophet is authorized to announce its expiration.
Prophetic Insight
If you carry a New Testament prophetic mantle, your greatest “battles” will not be with the “world,” but with the Religious Status Quo. The spirit of religion loves the title of the prophet but hates the truth of the prophet. It will try to use “Abraham” (past moves of God, old traditions, and established reputations) to silence the “Now” word of the Lord. You must have the “John the Baptist” courage to tell the truth to the “Vipers.” Do not be intimidated by someone’s “spiritual resume.” If there is no fruit of humility, love, and current obedience, their “Abrahamic lineage” is irrelevant. Your job is to swing the ax of Truth against the roots of religious pride. You aren’t being “mean”; you are clearing the ground for the True Vine to grow.
The Activation
Identify a “Religious Security” you have been leaning on—perhaps a title you hold, a church you’ve been in for years, or a “pedigree” you use to feel superior to others. Today, Lay Down the Pedigree. Say to the Lord: “I stop saying ‘I have Abraham as my father.’ I refuse to rely on my history. I ask that You would produce ‘Fruits of Repentance’ in me today. I yield to Your ax; cut away everything in me that is just religious performance.”
Daily Prayer: Lord God, I thank You that You desire Truth in the inward parts. I ask for the courage to confront the religious systems—starting with the one in my own heart. Forgive me for relying on my ‘spiritual background’ instead of Your Spirit. Lay Your ax to the root of my pride. Let my life be defined by Your fruit, not by my traditions. Use me as a voice of reformation in Your House. Amen.
