Week 31: Fruit Over Gifts (The Character Test)
Anchor Scripture: “Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.” — 2 Corinthians 3:17 (NKJV)
The Teaching
We conclude our week on the “Fruit Test” by looking at the fruit of the recipient. One of the most reliable ways to judge a prophetic voice is to observe the condition of those who follow it. The Gospel is a message of liberation; therefore, the prophetic office—which serves the Gospel—must always lead toward Liberty.
A false or immature prophet often uses “revelation” as a tool for Control. They speak words that create a “Spirit of Bondage.” This can manifest in several ways:
- Dependency: The words make the hearer feel they cannot make a decision without the prophet’s permission.
- Fear: The “revelation” uses threats of disaster or “loss of covering” to keep people in line.
- Religious Performance: The words lead people back into a system of “works” and legalism to stay in God’s good graces.
True prophetic ministry, however, leads to Sonship. It reminds the believer that they have direct access to the Father. It empowers the individual to walk in their own God-given authority. If a prophetic word leaves you feeling “clutched,” “restricted,” or “heavy with fear,” it has not come from the Spirit of Liberty. Even a word of correction (Day 128) should leave you with the “freedom to repent” and the hope of restoration.
Prophetic Insight
Maturity is measured by the Freedom of the Sheep. If you are a prophet, your goal should be to work yourself out of a job. You want the people to be so “activated” (Day 210) and so free in Christ that they don’t need you to tell them every step to take. If you find yourself enjoying the “control” you have over people’s lives, you are operating in a “spirit of witchcraft” (Day 234). The Holy Spirit is a Gentleman; He never forces or manipulates. He woos and He leads. Any prophetic voice that uses “secrets” or “anointing” to bypass a person’s free will is leading them into bondage. A true prophet sets people free to follow Jesus; a false prophet binds people to follow them.
The Activation
Evaluate the “Prophetic Climate” you are currently in. When you listen to your favorite voices, do you feel more like a “Son/Daughter” or more like a “Servant/Slave”? Do you feel a pressure to “perform” or a liberty to “abide”? Today, “Walk into the Open.” If there is a voice in your life that uses fear or control to keep you connected, intentionally distance yourself. Say to the Lord: “I am Your child. I refuse to be bound by the control of men. I choose the Liberty of Your Spirit.”
Daily Prayer: Lord Jesus, I thank You that You came to set the captives free. I ask for the grace to recognize the ‘Spirit of Liberty’ in every word I hear. Forgive me for allowing myself to be brought into bondage by the control of others. I choose today to walk in the freedom of Your Spirit. Let my own prophetic voice never be used to manipulate or to bind, but only to release Your people into their full destiny in You. Amen.
