Week 31: Fruit Over Gifts (The Character Test)
Anchor Scripture: “I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us… and not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church.” — 3 John 1:9–10 (NKJV)
The Teaching
One of the most dangerous character flaws in any leader, and especially in the prophetic office, is the Love of Preeminence. The Apostle John identifies a man named Diotrephes who was a “gatekeeper” in the church, but his motive was not the safety of the sheep—it was his own status. He wanted to be the first, the best, and the most important voice in the room.
The “Love of Preeminence” is the root of Prophetic Control. When a messenger loves the spotlight more than the Savior, they become “toxic gatekeepers.” They refuse to receive other prophetic voices because they feel threatened by them. They “forbid” anyone else from hearing from God or having influence. They use their gift to consolidate power rather than to equip the saints (Day 210).
A false prophet often builds a “Personality Cult” around their gift. They want people to follow them, to hang on their every word, and to view them as the only source of truth. They cannot handle being a “part” of the Body (Day 114); they insist on being the “Head.” This craving for preeminence is a direct contradiction of the prophetic mandate to “decrease” so that Christ can “increase” (Day 84).
Prophetic Insight
Maturity is measured by your “Comfort with Anonymity.” If you get angry when you aren’t introduced with your full title, or if you feel a “check” in your spirit only when someone else is being used by God, that is not discernment—it is Envy. The “Diotrephes Spirit” always leads to isolation (Day 188) and division. A true prophet is a “Friend of the Bridegroom” (John 3:29). Your greatest joy should be hearing the Groom’s voice, even if it comes through someone else’s mouth. If you crave the spotlight, you will eventually start “prophesying” out of your own need for attention (Day 218). Stay low, stay small, and stay happy to be ignored.
The Activation
Identify a situation where you felt “overlooked” or “ignored” recently. Instead of being offended, Celebrate the Silence. Spend time today thanking God for the other “members” of the Body who were seen. Specifically pray a blessing over another prophetic person who is more “visible” than you. Say to the Lord: “I refuse to have the preeminence. I am content to be a servant in the background. Let Your name be the only one that is celebrated.”
Daily Prayer: Lord Jesus, I thank You that You are the only Head of the Church. I repent for my desire to be important and for my love of preeminence. Forgive me for being threatened by the gifts of others. Break the Diotrephes spirit off my heart today. I choose to ‘decrease’ so that You may ‘increase.’ Let my only ambition be Your honor. Make me a humble member of Your Body, content with whatever place You give me. Amen.
