Week 31: Fruit Over Gifts (The Character Test)
Anchor Scripture: “You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.” — Matthew 7:16–17 (NKJV)
As we enter our second week of this month, we move from the source of the word to the nature of the messenger. If you want to know if a prophet is true, you stop looking at the “leaves” of their gifts and start looking at the “fruit” of their life.
The Teaching
Jesus gave us the definitive tool for discernment, and it is remarkably simple: The Fruit Test. In the natural world, you don’t identify a tree by its height, the color of its leaves, or the sound the wind makes through its branches. You identify it by what it produces. A thornbush might be tall and impressive, but it will never produce a grape.
In the prophetic office, we often fail this test because we are easily “dazzled” by the gift. We see a person with an accurate word of knowledge or a spectacular vision, and we immediately assume they are a “good tree.” But a spiritual gift is an instantaneous endowment of power; Fruit, however, is the result of a nature that has been cultivated over time through seasons of growth, pruning, and submission.
The “Fruit” Jesus is speaking of is the Fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23)—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. A prophet may have the “Power” to see the future, but if they lack the “Nature” of Christ—if they are arrogant, harsh, impatient, or prone to fits of rage—they are a “bad tree.” The gift might be real, but the vessel is false. To be a mature discerner, you must value the Character of the person more than the Clarity of their gift.
Prophetic Insight
The Fruit Test is a Long-Range Test. You cannot judge a prophet in a single “glory meeting” or after one powerful video. Any “thornbush” can hide its thorns for an hour behind a well-rehearsed persona. You must observe the “season” of their life. Does their ministry produce peace in the Body, or does it leave a trail of chaos and broken relationships? Do they exhibit self-control when they are criticized? A true prophet is a “Good Tree” whose life reflects the nature of the One they represent. If the “anointing” is high but the “character” is low, you are looking at a dangerous imbalance. Never let someone’s “miracles” talk you into ignoring their “malice.”
The Activation
Perform a “Fruit Check” on your own life and on the voices you allow to influence you. Today, stop looking at the “spectacular” and look at the “mundane.”
- How does this person treat those who cannot help them?
- How do you react when your “prophetic authority” is questioned?
Ask the Holy Spirit: “Lord, show me the fruit. Is the nature of Christ becoming more visible in me than the gift of the prophet?”
Daily Prayer: Lord Jesus, I thank You that You are the True Vine. I ask for the grace to be a ‘Good Tree’ in Your garden. Forgive me for being more obsessed with my gifts than with my fruit. I choose today to prioritize character over power. Let the fruit of Your Spirit be the primary indicator of my life. Give me the discernment to value nature over appearance in others, so that I am never deceived by a gifted thornbush. Amen.
