The Teaching
One of the most subtle attacks on a prophet’s character doesn’t come from their enemies, but from their Admirers. When a prophet is accurate, insightful, and helpful, people will naturally respond with praise. They will call you “amazing,” “anointed,” or “the best voice they’ve ever heard.” While gratitude is healthy, Flattery is a spiritual snare designed to trip the prophet’s feet.
Flattery is exaggerated or insincere praise given for the purpose of gain. In the context of the prophetic office, flattery is the enemy’s way of Inflating the Ego. If a prophet begins to believe their own “press reports,” they stop seeing themselves as a “jar of clay” (Day 34) and start seeing themselves as the “source of the power.”
Praise creates a “High” that the soul eventually craves. If you become addicted to the approval of the people you prophesy to, you will eventually find it impossible to deliver a “hard word” (Day 128) to them. You will subconsciously “edit” God’s Word to ensure the flow of flattery continues. To be a mature prophet, you must develop an Immunity to Praise. You must learn to receive a compliment, pass the glory to God, and remain emotionally detached from the applause.
Prophetic Insight
A Prophet must be a “Dead Man Walking” (Day 83). A dead person doesn’t feel the sting of a slap, and they don’t feel the thrill of a kiss. If you are deeply moved by people’s criticism, you will be easily manipulated by their flattery. Both are “distractions” from the Council (Day 15). People will often use flattery as a “Trojan Horse” (Day 177) to get close to you so they can influence your voice. Your job is to be Un-impressed by yourself and by those who flatter you. The moment you start enjoying the “status” of being a prophet, you are in the net. Stay low, stay small in your own eyes, and let the King alone be magnified.
The Activation
Identify a time recently when you felt a “rush” of pride after being praised for a prophetic word or a spiritual success. Today, “Deflate the Ego.” Spend 10 minutes in worship, specifically acknowledging that every good thing in you comes from Jesus. Say, “Lord, I give the praise back to You. I refuse to eat the glory. I am just a messenger; You are the Message.” If someone praises you today, practice the internal habit of immediately saying, “Thank You, Lord,” in your spirit.
Daily Prayer: Lord Jesus, I thank You that You alone are worthy of all praise. I ask for the grace to be immune to the flattery of men. Forgive me for my pride and for my desire to be celebrated. I refuse to let the applause of the crowd become a net for my feet. Keep me humble and hidden behind Your Cross. Let Your Name be the only one that is honored through my life. Amen.
