Absence of Belief- Thomas’ Initial Doubt About the Resurrection

May 2, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.” – John 20:24 (NIV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

John 20:24 introduces us to Thomas, also known as Didymus (the Twin), at a critical juncture in the story of the resurrection. The simple statement “was not with the disciples when Jesus came” sets the stage for his famous doubt. This absence, whether by chance or choice, placed him outside the immediate experience of the resurrected Christ. His physical absence would fuel his initial disbelief, highlighting the importance of community and shared experiences in strengthening faith.

As a disciple, you may sometimes find yourself disconnected from the community of faith. You may miss important gatherings, feel isolated from other believers, or struggle to participate fully in the life of the church. Thomas’ absence reminds you of the importance of community and the value of shared experiences in strengthening your faith. When we isolate ourselves, our faith becomes vulnerable to doubt and discouragement.

This week, make an intentional effort to connect with your church community. Attend services, participate in small groups, and seek opportunities to fellowship with other believers. If you have been feeling disconnected or isolated, reach out to a friend or pastor and share your struggles.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to recognize the importance of community in my life. Lead me to connect with other believers and to participate fully in the life of the church. Strengthen my faith through shared experiences and mutual encouragement. Protect me from the dangers of isolation and help me to find belonging and purpose in Your body. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
