When Truth Stings- The Reaction to Revelation

March 31, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“You who have received the law that was given through angels but have not obeyed it.” When the members of the Sanhedrin heard this, they were furious and gnashed their teeth at him.” – Acts 7:53-54 (NLT)

Good morning fellow disciples.

Acts 7:53-54 reveals the visceral reaction to Stephen’s message. He concludes his powerful sermon by reminding the Sanhedrin that they, who received the Law delivered by angels, had not obeyed it. This accusation, highlighting their hypocrisy and rebellion against God, ignited their fury. “They were furious and gnashed their teeth at him,” demonstrating the intense anger and hatred his words provoked. This passage illustrates how truth, when it challenges deeply held beliefs or exposes wrongdoing, can elicit a violent and hostile response from those who refuse to repent.

As a follower of Christ, you may experience rejection, animosity, or even hatred when you share the truth of the Gospel. People may react with anger, defensiveness, or hostility when confronted with their sin or challenged to change their ways. Do not be discouraged or surprised by such reactions. Remember that Jesus himself faced intense opposition and persecution for speaking the truth. You are empowered by the Holy Spirit to remain steadfast in your faith, to continue to speak the truth in love, and to trust that God will work in the hearts of those who resist.

This week, reflect on how you respond when confronted with truth that challenges your own beliefs or exposes your weaknesses. Do you become defensive, angry, or dismissive? Or do you remain open, humble, and willing to learn and grow? Strive to cultivate a spirit of humility and teachability. When you encounter opposition to the Gospel, respond with grace, patience, and understanding. Remember that your goal is not to win arguments, but to share the truth in a way that can soften hearts and lead to transformation. By redirecting your focus to Christ, you are able to better display His grace.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to be open to Your truth, even when it is challenging or uncomfortable. Give me a spirit of humility and teachability, so that I may always be willing to learn and grow. When I encounter opposition to the Gospel, help me to respond with grace, patience, and understanding. May my words and actions reflect Your love and truth, and may they lead others to a deeper understanding of Your grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
