Trusting Jesus When the Path is Unclear

January 24, 2025

By Andrew Williams

Now Jesus was deeply troubled, and he exclaimed, ‘I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me!’ The disciples looked at each other, wondering whom he could mean. The disciple Jesus loved was sitting next to Jesus at the table. Simon Peter motioned to him to ask, ‘Who’s he talking about?’” – John 13:21-24 (NLT)

Good morning fellow disciples.

In this passage, we see Jesus revealing the painful truth that one of His closest companions would betray Him. The disciples were confused and troubled, unsure of who Jesus meant. This moment shows the deep relational bonds between Jesus and His disciples and highlights their human frailty. Simon Peter, ever bold and curious, didn’t hesitate to ask for clarity but did so by motioning to the disciple whom Jesus loved (traditionally understood to be John). This moment teaches us that even in times of uncertainty and confusion, we are invited to draw closer to Jesus and seek understanding through our relationship with Him.

Peter’s actions remind us that discipleship is not about having all the answers but about seeking Jesus in our confusion. When life feels unclear, or when betrayal and pain seem close, we, like Peter, can redirect our focus toward Jesus by leaning into our relationship with Him and asking for wisdom. Peter encourages us to remain bold in drawing near to Christ, even in uncertain or troubling times.

Is there an area of your life where you feel confused, betrayed, or unclear about what Jesus is doing? Take time today to redirect your focus toward Jesus. Bring your questions, pain, and uncertainty to Him in prayer. Seek His wisdom through His Word, and trust that He sees the bigger picture, even when you don’t. Just as Peter and John leaned into their relationship with Jesus, let your relationship with Him be your anchor in times of doubt.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for being present with me in every season, even in times of confusion and pain. Like Peter, I often have questions and uncertainties about what is happening in my life. Help me to redirect my focus to You, trusting that You hold all things in Your hands. Teach me to seek You boldly and lean into my relationship with You, especially during times of doubt or fear. I commit to trusting Your plan and following You with humility and faith. In Your precious name, Amen.
