May 19, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?” – John 14:8-9 (NIV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

John 14:8-9 captures a pivotal moment in Jesus’ teaching to His disciples. Philip, yearning for a deeper understanding of God, asks, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Jesus’ response is both gentle and profound: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” This passage reveals the intimate connection between Jesus and the Father, emphasizing that Jesus is the visible manifestation of the invisible God. To understand God, one needs only to know Jesus.

As a disciple, you may sometimes long for a tangible experience of God, a clear sign, or undeniable proof of His existence. Philip’s request reminds you that Jesus is the ultimate revelation of God. By studying His life, His teachings, and His actions, you can gain a deeper understanding of God’s character, His love, and His purpose for your life. You are empowered to see God in Jesus and to experience His presence in your daily life. We can do this best when redirecting our focus on Jesus.

This week, commit to spending time studying the life of Jesus in the Gospels. Pay attention to His words, His actions, and His interactions with others. As you learn more about Him, ask God to reveal Himself to you through the person of Jesus. Seek to see God in all aspects of your life.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I long to know You more deeply. Help me to see You in Jesus and to understand Your character, Your love, and Your purpose for my life. Open my eyes to recognize Your presence in my daily life and guide me in Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
