Opening Prayer
Jesus, thank you for your incredible love for us. May our obedience be the natural and joyful response of a heart that is captivated by You.
Today’s Scripture (NLT)
John 14:15
“If you love me, obey my commandments.”
The word “obedience” can sometimes feel like a heavy burden, associated with strict rules and the fear of punishment. But in the context of our relationship with Jesus, obedience is reframed entirely. It is not the way we earn God’s love; it is the way we express our love for God.
Jesus’ statement here is simple and direct. The proof of our love for Him is not the songs we sing, the prayers we pray, or the emotions we feel. The ultimate evidence of our affection is our willingness to obey what He has commanded. This is not legalism; it is the logic of love. When you love someone, you naturally want to do the things that please them and honor them.
Think of God’s commands not as restrictive fences designed to keep you from fun, but as loving guardrails designed to keep you on the path of life and protect you from harm. Every command in Scripture flows from His good and loving heart for you. Therefore, walking in obedience is walking in the safest and most life-giving place you can possibly be. It is the root of a healthy, thriving relationship with God.
Disciples’ Life Tip: Is there a specific command from God that you have been struggling to obey? Instead of seeing it as a rule to follow, ask God to help you see the love and wisdom behind it. Pray, “Lord, help me to want what you want for me.”
Closing Prayer: Father God, change our hearts. May we move from reluctant compliance to joyful obedience, motivated not by duty, but by a deep and abiding love for you. Amen.
