The Price of Disloyalty- Judas’s Bargain with Darkness

April 18, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. From that time on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.” – Matthew 26:14-16 (NIV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

Matthew 26:14-16 reveals the chilling act of betrayal at the heart of Judas’s story. Driven by greed or disillusionment (the text doesn’t explicitly say why), he approaches the chief priests and coldly inquires, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him to you?” The transaction is chillingly businesslike: they offer him thirty pieces of silver, and from that moment forward, Judas seeks an opportunity to betray Jesus. This passage underscores the destructive power of greed and the devastating consequences of turning against Christ.

As a disciple, you will likely face temptations and opportunities to compromise your values for personal gain. You may be offered positions, promotions, or possessions that require you to compromise your integrity or to turn a blind eye to wrongdoing. Judas’s example serves as a stark warning against the allure of earthly riches and the danger of selling out your faith for temporary advantage. You are called to remain steadfast in your commitment to Christ, even when it comes at a personal cost.

This week, examine your own heart for any areas where you may be tempted to compromise your values or to prioritize personal gain over your commitment to Christ. Identify any areas where you might be vulnerable to the temptation of greed or materialism. Pray for strength and discernment to resist temptation and to remain faithful to your calling. Redirecting your focus towards God is essential and will steer you away from darkness.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, protect me from the allure of earthly riches and the temptation to compromise my values for personal gain. Give me the strength to resist temptation and to remain faithful to my calling, even when it comes at a personal cost. Help me to keep my eyes fixed on you and to prioritize your kingdom above all else. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
