By Andrew Williams
“Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits and to heal every disease and sickness. These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter), his brother Andrew, James son of Zebedee, and his brother John, Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot….” – Matthew 10:1-2,4 (NIV)
Good morning fellow disciples.
Matthew 10:1-2,4 lists Judas Iscariot alongside the other apostles, emphasizing that he received the same commission, authority, and power to minister as the rest. He, too, would have preached the Gospel, healed the sick, and cast out demons in Jesus’ name. This reality presents a stark contrast to his ultimate betrayal. The passage highlights that possessing spiritual gifts and engaging in ministry does not guarantee a faithful heart or a righteous path. Judas had the potential to use his gifts for God’s glory, but he ultimately chose a different path.
As a disciple, you are also entrusted with gifts, talents, and opportunities to serve God. You may experience success in ministry, witness miracles, and see God’s power at work in your life. However, remember Judas’s example and remain vigilant against pride, temptation, and a hardened heart. True discipleship is not just about what you do for God, but about the condition of your heart and your commitment to following Him with humility and obedience. Never assume that your gifts or your past service guarantee your future faithfulness.
This week, examine your motivations for serving God. Are you driven by a genuine love for Him and a desire to see His Kingdom advanced, or are you seeking personal recognition, power, or gain? Confess any pride, selfishness, or impure motives to God and ask Him to purify your heart. Commit to serving Him with humility, gratitude, and a genuine desire to please Him above all else.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, forgive me for the times when I have served You with impure motives or a hardened heart. Purify my heart and fill me with Your love, grace, and humility. Help me to use my gifts, talents, and opportunities to serve You and others with a genuine desire to please You above all else. Keep me vigilant against pride, temptation, and a lack of faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
