“And the rest of the Jews acted hypocritically along with him [Peter], so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy.” – Galatians 2:13 (ESV)
Good morning fellow disciples.
Galatians 2:13 presents a humbling account of a misstep in Barnabas’ ministry. Paul recounts an incident in Antioch where Peter, under pressure from Jewish legalists, withdrew from eating with Gentile believers. Tragically, this hypocrisy influenced others, “so that even Barnabas was led astray by their hypocrisy.” This verse serves as a reminder that even the most mature and well-intentioned believers are susceptible to influence, temptation, and lapses in judgment.
As a disciple, you will face moments when you are tempted to compromise your values, to conform to the expectations of others, or to give in to pressure from those around you. Barnabas’ example reminds you to be vigilant, to guard your heart against deception, and to stay rooted in the truth of God’s Word. Don’t underestimate the power of peer pressure or the subtlety of hypocrisy.
This week, reflect on the influences in your life. Are there individuals or groups who may be subtly pressuring you to compromise your values or to deviate from the truth? Identify any areas where you may be vulnerable to peer pressure or to the temptation to conform. Commit to standing firm in your faith, even when it’s difficult or unpopular.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, protect me from the temptation to compromise my values or to conform to the expectations of others. Give me the wisdom to discern truth from error and the courage to stand firm in my faith, even when it’s difficult or unpopular. Surround me with people who will encourage me to live with integrity and to honor You in all that I do. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
