The Greenhouse Effect: Why We Can’t Grow Alone

November 6, 2025

By Andrew Williams

Opening Prayer
Lord, thank you for the gift of your Church. Help us to lean into our community, knowing that we grow better together.

Today’s Scripture (NLT)
Proverbs 27:17
“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”

A single plant can struggle against the elements, but a greenhouse provides the perfect, controlled environment for plants to thrive together. In the same way, the local church is God’s greenhouse for spiritual growth. The Christian life was never intended to be a solo journey. We need each other to grow to our full potential.

This proverb paints a vivid picture. Iron sharpening iron involves friction. It’s not always comfortable. True Christian community is not just about polite Sunday morning greetings. It’s about relationships that are real enough to challenge us, correct us in love, and encourage us when we are weak. Our friends sharpen our thinking, help us see our blind spots, and hold us accountable to our commitments.

Isolation is one of the greatest enemies of spiritual growth. When we are alone, our doubts can feel overwhelming and our temptations can seem unbeatable. But in the greenhouse of community, we find the shared warmth of worship, the protection of prayer, and the sharpening influence of godly friendships. Don’t try to grow alone.

Disciples’ Life Tip: This week, be the “iron” for someone else. Reach out to a friend from church with a specific encouragement. Or, take a risk and share a struggle you are facing with a trusted believer, asking them to sharpen you with their prayers and perspective.

Closing Prayer: Father God, forgive us for trying to live our faith in isolation. Drive us into deep, authentic community where we can sharpen one another and grow together for your glory. Amen.
