Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father, help us to see you as you truly are: a loving, gracious Father who runs to embrace His returning children.
Today’s Scripture (NLT)
Luke 15:20b
“And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him. His heart was filled with love and compassion, and he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.”
What do we expect when we finally turn back to God after a season of distance? Do we expect a lecture? A list of things we need to do to earn our way back? A disappointed sigh? Jesus tells the story of the Prodigal Son to paint a radically different picture of God’s heart toward us.
In the story, the son has rehearsed his speech, ready to beg for a servant’s position. But the father isn’t waiting on the porch with his arms crossed. He is watching, waiting, longing. And the moment he sees his son, he doesn’t wait. He runs. This was undignified for an elder in that culture, but the father’s love overrides all custom.
This is a picture of your Heavenly Father’s heart for you. When you turn back toward Him, He doesn’t wait for you to prove yourself. His heart is filled with compassion, and He runs to meet you. He doesn’t offer a handshake; He offers an embrace. He doesn’t offer probation; He throws a party. Your return is not met with condemnation, but with celebration. This is the grace that welcomes you home.
Disciples’ Life Tip: Read the full story of the Prodigal Son in Luke 15:11-32 today. As you read, place yourself in the story as the returning child. Allow yourself to feel the warmth of the Father’s embrace.
Closing Prayer: Father, we are undone by Your grace. Thank You for not just welcoming us back, but for running to us with open arms. Thank You for the embrace that tells us we are truly home. Amen.
