By Andrew Williams
Opening Prayer:
Holy Spirit, we need you. Fill us and lead us, that we might walk in a way that pleases the Father and not our sinful nature.
Today’s Scripture: Galatians 5:16-17(NLT)
“So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.”
Of the three fronts we face, this one is often the most personal and persistent: the battle against our own sinful nature, or “the flesh.” Before we knew Christ, our sinful nature was in the driver’s seat. But now, for those in Christ, the Holy Spirit lives in us. This creates an internal conflict. The flesh is that part of you that is still drawn to selfishness, pride, impurity, and impatience. It’s the part that “wants to do evil.”
Paul describes these two forces—the Spirit and the flesh—as “constantly fighting each other.” Does this feel familiar? Have you ever intended to be patient, but snapped in anger? Intended to be disciplined, but chose laziness instead? That is this battle in action. It’s not a sign that you aren’t saved; it’s a sign that you are saved and the Spirit of God is at war with the sin that remains.
It’s so important to hear this with grace. This struggle is real for every single believer. The solution isn’t to try harder in our own strength. The command is to “let the Holy Spirit guide your lives.” The victory comes not through self-condemnation, but through daily, moment-by-moment surrender to the Spirit’s leading.
Disciple’s Life Tip:
When you feel the pull of the flesh today—a temptation toward anger, lust, or selfishness—don’t just try to fight it. Pause and pray this simple prayer: “Holy Spirit, I can’t do this, but you can. Guide me right now. I choose to walk with you.”
Closing Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that we are not left to fight this internal battle alone. Thank you for the gift of your Spirit, who leads us to victory. Amen.
