The Demand for Proof- Thomas’ Insistence on Tangible Evidence

May 3, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my fingers where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” – John 20:25 (NIV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

John 20:25 reveals the depth of Thomas’ skepticism regarding the resurrection of Jesus. When the other disciples joyfully proclaim, “We have seen the Lord!” Thomas responds with a firm declaration of disbelief: “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my fingers where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” This passage highlights Thomas’ insistence on tangible, empirical evidence before accepting the truth of the resurrection. It reveals a character who relies on physical proof and struggles to embrace faith based on the testimony of others.

As a disciple, you may sometimes struggle to believe in things that you cannot see, touch, or understand. You may be tempted to demand proof, to question the truth, or to doubt the reality of God’s power. Thomas’ example reminds you that it’s okay to have questions, to seek understanding, and to wrestle with your faith. However, be mindful of the danger of allowing your skepticism to harden your heart and to prevent you from experiencing the joy and peace of believing. While we might not know everything, it is important to trust that God’s plan is sovereign.

This week, if you are struggling with doubts or skepticism, commit to seeking answers with an open heart and a willingness to believe. Engage in prayer, study the Scriptures, and seek the counsel of trusted mentors or friends. Be open to the possibility that God may reveal Himself to you in unexpected ways. Remember, true faith is not the absence of doubt, but the willingness to trust in God, even when you don’t have all the answers.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I acknowledge my struggles with doubt and skepticism. Help me to approach my questions with an open heart and a willingness to believe. Lead me to the truth and reveal Yourself to me in a way that I can understand. Strengthen my faith and help me to trust in You, even when I don’t have all the answers. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
