The Antidote to Anxiety: Resting in His Sovereignty

November 13, 2025

By Andrew Williams

Opening Prayer
Sovereign Lord, in a world that feels out of control, quiet our anxious hearts with the truth that You are on the throne.

Today’s Scripture (NLT)
Psalm 46:10a
“Be still, and know that I am God!”

So much of our weariness comes from anxiety—the mental and emotional weight of trying to control outcomes, worrying about the future, and carrying the burden of “what ifs.” Anxiety is the natural result of believing, even subconsciously, that everything is up to us.

Into this storm of worry, God speaks a powerful, peace-giving command: “Be still, and know that I am God!” This is the ultimate antidote to anxiety. The command to “be still” is a call to cease our frantic striving, our mental gymnastics, and our desperate attempts to control.

And in that stillness, we are to “know that I am God.” This means actively remembering who He is. He is sovereign. He is all-powerful. He is all-wise. He is in control when our lives feel out of control. True rest is found not in having all the answers, but in trusting the One who is the answer. Resting in His sovereignty means we can let go of the need to control everything, because we know and trust the One who holds everything in His hands.

Disciples’ Life Tip: When you feel anxious today, practice this “Be Still” exercise. Stop what you’re doing for one minute. Close your eyes, take three slow, deep breaths, and silently repeat the phrase, “Be still, and know that He is God.”

Closing Prayer: God, we release our grip on the things we cannot control. We choose to be still and to place our trust in your perfect, sovereign care over our lives. Thank you for being God. Amen.
