“And he said to all, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.'” (Luke 9:23)
Good morning fellow disciples, in this series we will be answering questions that will help us to become faithful disciples of Christ.
The call to take up our cross daily is a profound invitation from Jesus. It signifies a commitment to follow Him wholeheartedly, embracing both the challenges and the joys that come with discipleship.
BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO TAKE UP OUR CROSS DAILY?
- 1. Denying Self
“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself…” (Luke 9:23)
Taking up our cross begins with self-denial. This means placing God’s will above our own desires and ambitions. It can be challenging to let go of our selfish inclinations, but true freedom is found in surrendering to God. Denying ourselves allows us to align our hearts with His purpose, fostering a deeper relationship with Him.
2. Embracing Sacrifice
“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13)
Taking up our cross involves embracing sacrifice. Jesus demonstrated the ultimate sacrifice through His death on the cross. As His followers, we are called to reflect that same love and willingness to sacrifice for others. This could mean giving up time, resources, or comfort to serve those in need, embodying the love of Christ in practical ways.
3. Facing Challenges
“Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.” (2 Timothy 3:12)
Taking up our cross daily means recognizing that following Christ may lead to challenges and opposition. We may face trials, misunderstandings, or even persecution for our faith. However, we are reminded that these struggles can strengthen our faith and draw us closer to God. Embracing our cross means trusting Him through the difficult moments.
4. Living with Purpose
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10)
When we take up our cross, we acknowledge that our lives have a greater purpose. We are called to engage in the good works that God has prepared for us. This could involve sharing the Gospel, helping those in need, or contributing to our communities. Living with purpose allows us to make a lasting impact for God’s kingdom.
5. Following Christ
“And he who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” (Matthew 10:38)
Ultimately, taking up our cross means following Jesus daily. It’s a commitment to walk in His footsteps, imitating His love, humility, and obedience. As we strive to live like Him, we grow deeper in our understanding of His heart and His mission for our lives.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for the invitation to follow You and take up our cross daily. Help us to understand what it means to deny ourselves and seek Your will above our own.
Give us the strength to embrace the sacrifices that come with following You. May we be willing to lay down our lives in love for others, reflecting the love of Christ in all we do.
When challenges arise, remind us of Your faithfulness and help us to trust You completely. Guide us in living with purpose, engaging in the good works You have prepared for us.
Lord Jesus, may our lives be a testament to our commitment to follow You. Empower us by Your Spirit to take up our cross daily and to walk in Your ways. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Must Jesus bear the cross alone, and all the world go free? No, there’s a cross for every one, and there’s a cross for me.
