“Then Simon Peter drew a sword and slashed off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest’s slave. But Jesus said to Peter, ‘Put your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink from the cup of suffering the Father has given me?’” – John 18:10-11 (NLT)
Good morning fellow disciples.
In this passage, we see Peter’s impulsive nature in full display. As Jesus is being arrested, Peter takes matters into his own hands and uses a sword to defend Him. However, Peter’s actions were not aligned with God’s plan. Jesus immediately rebuked Peter, reminding him that this moment—His arrest and eventual crucifixion—was part of the Father’s will. Jesus’ response teaches us that relying on our own strength or taking control out of fear or misunderstanding often goes against God’s greater purpose. Instead, Jesus models for us complete submission to the will of God, even when it involves suffering.
Peter’s passion and loyalty are admirable, but his actions were misguided because he didn’t fully understand God’s plan. Like Peter, we sometimes act impulsively, trying to control situations that feel overwhelming or threatening. This passage empowers us to redirect our focus from our own efforts to trusting God’s perfect will. Jesus’ calm surrender to the Father’s plan reminds us that God is in control, even in the most difficult circumstances. We don’t have to fight battles in our own strength—our role is to trust and obey Him.
Are you holding on too tightly to a situation in your life, trying to control the outcome in your own strength? Take time today to identify areas where you need to surrender to God’s plan. Redirect your focus from wielding your own “sword” to trusting in God’s sovereignty. Instead of reacting impulsively, pause and pray, asking God to guide your actions and align your heart with His will. Let go of control and allow Him to work through His perfect plan.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for showing us the perfect example of surrender and trust in the Father’s plan. Like Peter, I often try to take control of situations, relying on my own strength instead of trusting You. Forgive me for the times I’ve acted impulsively or resisted Your will. Today, I redirect my focus to You and Your perfect plan for my life. I surrender control to You and trust that You are working for my good. I will follow You with faith and obedience. Amen.
