Standing Near- Mary Magdalene’s Steadfast Proximity to Jesus

“Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.” – John 19:25 (NIV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

John 19:25 paints a poignant scene of those who remained close to Jesus during His crucifixion. Among them, we find Mary Magdalene, standing “near the cross.” Her physical proximity symbolizes her unwavering loyalty and deep affection for Jesus. While others, including some of His closest male disciples, had fled in fear, Mary Magdalene chose to stay, to witness His suffering, and to offer whatever comfort she could.

As a disciple, you may be called to stand near those who are suffering, to offer your presence, your compassion, and your support, even when it’s difficult or painful. You may not be able to fix their problems or take away their pain, but your presence can be a powerful source of comfort and encouragement. Mary Magdalene’s example reminds you that sometimes the most important thing you can do is simply show up and be present with those who are hurting.

This week, be aware of those in your life who may be going through a difficult time. Reach out to them and offer your support, your presence, or your prayers. Let them know that you care and that you are there for them. Your simple act of being present can make a profound difference in their lives.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to be a source of comfort and support to those who are suffering. Give me the compassion to reach out to them, the wisdom to know how to help them, and the courage to stand with them, even when it’s difficult or painful. May my presence be a blessing to those in need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
