Sing to the Lord my Helper

By Andrew Williams

Because you are my helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings.
Psalms 63:7 NLT

Good morning fellow disciples.

A helper is a person or thing that provides assistance or support to someone in need. Helpers offer aid, guidance, or support to make tasks or situations easier or more manageable for others. Helpers contribute positively to accomplishing a particular goal or solving a problem.

David wrote Psalms 63 when he was in the desert fleeing from king Saul. During this time David suffered many hardships, and as he thought about his life, he was extremely grateful for his God.

He knew that God was his helper! It was God who was keeping him safe. It was God who assisted him in his many escapes and victories. It was God who provided his followers. It was God who spiritually sustained him.

Note David’s position: he was singing to God from the ‘shadow of God’s wings’. He ensured that he never left the presence of the one who was his greatest helper.

Prayer: O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water. I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory.

Your unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you! I will praise you as long as I live, lifting up my hands to you in prayer. You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy.

I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night. Because you are my helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you; your strong right hand holds me securely.
{Psalms 63:1‭-‬8 NLT}

Amen.

  1. Sometimes we allow our challenges to make us hard and cynical and we demonstrate an attitude of surrender, but David is reminding us that God is merciful and so he sang for joy.
