“Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers, Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen a lifelong friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, ‘Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.’ Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.” – Acts 13:1-3 (ESV)
Good morning fellow disciples.
Acts 13:1-3 marks a pivotal moment in the history of the early church and in the life of Barnabas. He is listed first among the prophets and teachers in Antioch, demonstrating his leadership and influence. While the church is worshipping and fasting, the Holy Spirit speaks, specifically directing them to “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” This highlights the importance of prayer, worship, and discernment in receiving God’s direction. After further fasting and prayer, the church lays hands on Barnabas and Saul, commissioning them for the first major missionary outreach to the Gentiles. This passage emphasizes the divine call on Barnabas’ life and the church’s obedience to the Holy Spirit.
As a disciple, you also have a unique calling and a specific purpose in God’s plan. Barnabas’ example reminds you to prioritize prayer, worship, and discernment in seeking God’s direction for your life. You are empowered to listen to the Holy Spirit, to obey His promptings, and to step out in faith to fulfill your calling.
This week, set aside dedicated time for prayer, worship, and reflection. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal your calling and your purpose in God’s plan. Be open to receiving guidance from trusted mentors and spiritual leaders. If you sense God calling you to a new direction or a specific task, take steps to prepare yourself and to step out in faith.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I seek your guidance and direction in my life. Help me to prioritize prayer, worship, and discernment, so that I may hear your voice and understand your will. Reveal my calling and my purpose in your plan. Give me the courage to step out in faith and to obey your promptings. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
