My Identity in Christ- Salt and Light

By Andrew Williams

Matthew 5:13-14 (NLT): “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, and will be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.”

Good morning fellow disciples.

Let us turn our attention today to a powerful and evocative passage that speaks to our role as agents of transformation in the world.

Jesus uses the metaphors of salt and light to describe the impact we should have on our communities. Salt preserves and flavors; it enhances and protects. Similarly, we are called to preserve the moral fabric of society, to speak truth to power, and to offer a counter-cultural influence that resists the decay and corruption of the world. We are to be a positive force, bringing out the best in others and making the world a better place.

Light, on the other hand, illuminates and guides. It reveals what is hidden, exposes darkness, and points the way forward. As followers of Christ, we are called to be beacons of hope, shining brightly in a world that is often shrouded in darkness. We are to be a source of encouragement, inspiration, and guidance, leading others towards the truth and transforming lives through our actions and our words.

This understanding empowers us to live with purpose and intentionality. It reminds us that our lives are not meant to be lived in isolation; we are called to be active participants in the transformation of our communities. We are not to hide our faith; we are to let our light shine brightly, impacting those around us for the glory of God.

Today, I challenge you to actively consider how you can be salt and light in your own community. Ask yourself: How can I preserve the moral fabric of my community? How can I speak truth to power? How can I offer encouragement and support to those who are struggling? How can I share the love of Christ with those around me? Look for opportunities to serve, to share, to inspire, and to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank You for the privilege of being Your salt and light in the world. Help us to be agents of transformation in our communities, preserving the moral fabric of society and illuminating the path for others. Empower us to speak truth with love, to offer encouragement and support, and to share Your love with all we encounter. May our lives be a testament to Your grace and a beacon of hope in a world shrouded in darkness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
