One Sabbath, Jesus and his disciples were walking through a field of wheat. The disciples were hungry, so they plucked off some heads of grain to eat. But when some of the Pharisees saw what was happening, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples shouldn’t be harvesting grain on the Sabbath!” Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for the sake of people, and not people for the Sabbath.
Mark 2:23-24, 27 TPT
Good morning fellow disciples.
Is the Sabbath a burden for you or is it a blessing?
Do you feel free to worship your God on this day or do you feel burdened down because of a religious system?
Are you more focused on trying not to break laws, or are you more focused on fellowshipping with God?
What the disciples did was not against the law. They did not harvest any grain.
“When you enter your neighbor’s vineyard, you may eat as many grapes as you want until you are full, but you must not put any in your container. When you enter your neighbor’s standing grain, you may pluck heads of grain with your hand, but you must not put a sickle to your neighbor’s grain.
Deuteronomy 23:24-25 HCSB
Here we see the Pharisees trying to make it seem as if what they were doing was wrong. When they did this they wrongfully accused Jesus and His disciples of breaking the sabbath. This way of thinking can cause persons to feel burdened by a religious system.
It was God’s intention that man should rest and enjoy the Sabbath. Do you enjoy your Sabbath rest?
Prayer: Father God, thank You for the Sabbath rest that You provide for me. On it I fellowship with You and I do the things that are pleasing in Your sight. I listen to You and I follow Your Holy Spirit’s leading.
Just like the disciples followed Jesus I follow you. Just like Jesus defended the disciples, so I know You will defend me when I do what is right on Your Sabbath even when others don’t agree. Amen.
