Acts 4:5-7 (NLT) “The next day the council of all the rulers and elders and teachers of religious law met in Jerusalem. Annas the high priest was there, along with Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and other relatives of the high priest. They brought in the two disciples and demanded, ‘By what power, or in whose name, have you done this?’”
Good morning fellow disciples.
In this passage, Peter and John are brought before the highest religious authorities of their time. The council, which included prominent figures such as Annas and Caiaphas, demanded to know the source of the power behind the healing of the crippled man. This was not just a question of curiosity—it was a challenge to the authority of Jesus, whom Peter and John boldly represented. The leaders were focused on earthly power structures, but Peter and John knew that the ultimate authority was God’s. This moment sets the stage for the disciples to proclaim that the power behind their actions is none other than Jesus Christ.
Peter and John’s confidence in standing before these influential leaders should encourage us as disciples. They did not waver or feel intimidated because they knew the authority of Jesus far surpassed any earthly power. As disciples today, we may face situations where we are questioned about our faith or challenged for living boldly for Christ. In those moments, we can redirect our focus from the pressure of human authority or judgment to the infinite power and authority of our Savior. God equips us to stand firm when we trust in Him as our ultimate source of strength and wisdom.
This week, reflect on an area of your life where you might feel pressured or intimidated by others. How can you redirect your focus to trust in God’s authority instead of fearing human opinions or power? Make it a point to stand firm in your faith, whether it’s by speaking truth in love, standing up for what’s right, or simply living out your faith boldly in everyday situations. Trust that God’s authority is greater than any challenge you may face.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Peter and John, who stood boldly before earthly authorities because they trusted in Your ultimate power and authority. Forgive me for the times I’ve allowed fear or intimidation to silence my faith. Help me to redirect my focus to You, knowing that You are in control of all things. Fill me with the courage and confidence to represent You boldly in every situation. I commit to trusting in Your authority as I live out my calling as a disciple. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
