Matthew 19:27 (NLT): “Then Peter said to him, ‘We’ve given up everything to follow you. What will we get?'”
Good morning fellow disciples.
In this verse, Peter voices a question that resonates with many of us: “What’s in it for me?” After hearing Jesus’ challenging teaching about the rich young ruler and the sacrifices necessary to follow Him, Peter reflects on the cost of discipleship. He and the other disciples had left their jobs, families, and comforts to follow Jesus. With a genuine yet humanly vulnerable heart, Peter asks what their sacrifice will yield.
Jesus doesn’t rebuke Peter for asking but instead reassures him (in the following verses) that those who sacrifice for His sake will receive eternal rewards—treasures far greater than anything they have given up. This moment redirects Peter’s focus from earthly concerns to the eternal blessings of living for God. It’s a reminder that following Jesus is not about earthly compensation but about the unmatched joy and fulfillment found in His kingdom.
Peter’s question shows his humanity and desire to understand the purpose behind his sacrifices. As disciples, we can relate to Peter’s longing for assurance, especially when the cost of following Jesus feels heavy. But Jesus’ response reminds Peter—and us—of the bigger picture: the eternal reward far outweighs any temporary loss.
Peter’s journey as a disciple is one of learning to trust God’s promises. This moment empowers us to do the same, knowing that Jesus sees every sacrifice and that nothing done in His name is in vain. Like Peter, we can trust that our surrender to Him will lead to eternal joy and purpose.
Have you ever wondered if the sacrifices you’ve made to follow Jesus are worth it? Are you tempted to measure your faith journey by earthly rewards? Redirect your focus to the eternal promises of God. Reflect on the blessings you’ve already received—His love, grace, and the hope of eternity—and trust that He sees and honors every act of obedience and faith.
This week, take time to thank God for the privilege of following Him, even when it requires sacrifice. Write down one area of your life where you’ve surrendered something for God’s sake, and ask Him to help you see how He’s using that surrender for His glory. Let this be a moment of encouragement, reminding yourself that your sacrifices are investments in eternity.
Prayer: Father God, thank You for reminding me, through Peter’s question, that You see and value every sacrifice I make for You. I confess that I sometimes focus on earthly rewards and lose sight of the eternal joy You’ve promised. Today, I choose to redirect my focus to Your kingdom, trusting that nothing I give up for You is ever wasted. Strengthen my faith, Lord, and help me to walk as a disciple who values Your eternal rewards above all else. May my heart rest in the assurance of Your promises. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
