Redirecting Our Focus: Faithful Readiness as Disciples

By Andrew Williams

“You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.” Peter asked, ‘Lord, is that illustration just for us or for everyone?'” – Luke 12:40-41 (NLT)

Good morning fellow disciples.

Jesus had just finished teaching about the importance of being watchful and prepared for His return, using the illustration of a master returning unexpectedly and finding his servants either faithful or negligent. He emphasized the need for constant readiness: “You also must be ready all the time, for the Son of Man will come when least expected.”

Peter, ever the curious and bold disciple, asked a thought-provoking question: “Lord, is that illustration just for us or for everyone?” His question reveals his desire to understand the scope of Jesus’ teaching. Was this call to readiness meant only for the disciples, or was it meant for the larger audience? Peter’s inquiry reminds us of his role as one who sought clarification, often speaking on behalf of the group. It also highlights Jesus’ call for His followers to take personal responsibility in living faithfully, regardless of whether the message was for a small group or the entire world.

This passage underscores the timeless truth that readiness is not optional for disciples of Jesus. It’s a daily commitment to live faithfully, expectantly, and obediently, knowing that Jesus could return at any moment.

Peter’s question empowers us to seek clarity about our role as disciples. Like Peter, we may wrestle with understanding Jesus’ teachings and how they apply to our lives. But his willingness to ask shows us that discipleship involves actively engaging with God’s Word, not passively listening. Jesus’ call to be ready “all the time” is a wake-up call to redirect our focus from complacency to vigilance.

We are empowered to live with purpose, knowing that Jesus’ return is certain, though the timing is unknown. Peter reminds us that readiness is not just for a select few—it’s for all who follow Christ. This readiness involves cultivating faithfulness in the “small” moments of life, trusting that our obedience today prepares us for His coming tomorrow.

Take a moment today to reflect on how “ready” you are for Jesus’ return. Are there areas of your life where you’ve grown spiritually complacent or distracted? Redirect your focus by identifying one specific way you can live more faithfully and expectantly this week—whether it’s through deepening your prayer life, serving others, or spending more time in God’s Word. Additionally, consider who in your life might need to hear the message of readiness and share the hope of Christ with them.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for calling me to live a life of readiness and faithfulness. Like Peter, I want to understand Your teachings and apply them to my life. I confess that I sometimes lose focus, becoming complacent or distracted by the cares of this world. Help me to redirect my focus to the urgency of living for You each day, with the hope and expectation of Your return. Teach me to be vigilant and faithful in the small and big moments alike. Use me to share Your truth with others so that they, too, can be ready for Your coming. In Your name, I pray, Amen.
