Redirecting Our Focus: Declaring Who Jesus Is

By Andrew Williams

“Then he asked them, ‘But who do you say I am?’ Peter replied, ‘You are the Messiah.'” – Mark 8:29 (NLT)

Good morning fellow disciples.

This powerful moment in Mark’s Gospel records a pivotal question Jesus asked His disciples: “Who do you say I am?” It’s a deeply personal question—one that goes beyond what others think or believe about Jesus. Peter’s response, “You are the Messiah,” is a bold and profound declaration of faith. In this moment, Peter acknowledges that Jesus is not just a great teacher, prophet, or miracle worker, but the long-awaited Savior, the Christ sent by God.

Peter’s confession is significant because it highlights a moment of clarity and spiritual maturity in his walk with Jesus. Though Peter would still face challenges in fully understanding Jesus’ mission, this declaration shows that he recognized Jesus’ divine identity. It also reminds us that following Jesus requires more than just being near Him—it requires knowing who He truly is and proclaiming that truth with conviction.

Peter’s declaration empowers us to reflect on our own understanding of Jesus. Like Peter, we are faced with the same question: “Who do you say I am?” It’s a question that requires us to take a stand in a world full of differing opinions about Jesus. Peter’s boldness reminds us that our faith is not just about what others believe or say—it’s about our personal relationship with Jesus and our willingness to proclaim Him as our Savior.

You, too, are invited to redirect your focus from the voices of the world to the truth of who Jesus is. When you declare Him as the Messiah, the Savior of your life, you are not only affirming your faith but also stepping into the calling to live boldly for Him. Like Peter, your confession of faith can be a foundation for how you live, serve, and share the Gospel.

Take time today to reflect on your personal answer to Jesus’ question: “Who do you say I am?” Write it down in your journal or share it with a trusted friend or family member as a way of affirming your faith. If you haven’t already, take a moment to declare Jesus as your Messiah in prayer. Then, think about how you can share this truth with someone in your life. Redirect your focus from any doubts or fears and boldly proclaim Jesus as your Savior in both word and action.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, today I declare that You are the Messiah, the Savior of my life. Thank You for revealing Yourself to me and for the grace that allows me to know You personally. Like Peter, I want to boldly proclaim who You are, not just with my words but with my life. Help me to redirect my focus from the distractions of the world to the truth of Your identity. Strengthen my faith so that I can live boldly for You and share Your love with others. In Your name, I pray, Amen.
