Redirecting Our Focus: Beholding His Glory

By Andrew Williams

“Six days later Jesus took Peter and the two brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light.” – Matthew 17:1-2 (NLT)

Good morning fellow disciples.

In this passage, Jesus leads Peter, James, and John to a high mountain where they witness an extraordinary moment: the Transfiguration. Jesus’ physical appearance is transformed, revealing His divine glory. His face shines like the sun, and His clothes become dazzling white. This moment is a glimpse of who Jesus truly is—the Son of God, full of divine power and majesty.

For Peter, who often struggled to fully grasp Jesus’ mission, this experience was a powerful redirection of focus. It was a moment of awe and wonder, reminding him and the others that Jesus was not just a great teacher or prophet—He was the Holy One of God, the Messiah. The Transfiguration revealed the glory of Christ and invited the disciples to see Him in a new light, preparing them for the challenges ahead.

This passage teaches us that discipleship involves moments where we are called to pause and behold the glory of Jesus. In the midst of life’s uncertainties and struggles, we need to be reminded of who He truly is—our Savior, King, and Lord.

Peter’s experience on the mountain empowers us to seek moments of stillness where we can refocus on Jesus’ glory and divine nature. Like Peter, we may often get caught up in the demands of life or struggle with doubts and questions about God’s plan. But this passage reminds us to redirect our focus from the noise of the world to the majesty of Christ.

The Transfiguration was a moment of clarity for Peter—it helped him see beyond the challenges of the present and recognize the eternal glory of Jesus. In the same way, when we intentionally turn our eyes to Jesus, we are reminded of His power and presence in our lives. He is not just with us; He is the King of glory who reigns over all.

Today, set aside some time to “go up the mountain” in your spiritual life—find a quiet place to pray, worship, and reflect on the majesty of Jesus. Redirect your focus from the busyness of life to His glory and presence. Meditate on His power and His role as the King of kings and Lord of lords. Consider journaling about His greatness or reading Scripture that exalts His divine nature, such as Psalm 96 or Revelation 1. Let this time remind you of who Jesus is and renew your faith in Him.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I stand in awe of Your glory and majesty. Like Peter, I sometimes get distracted by the challenges of life and fail to fully see who You are. Help me to redirect my focus to Your divine power and presence. Teach me to pause and behold Your glory, to spend time in Your presence, and to worship You as the King of kings and Lord of lords. Strengthen my faith and help me to live each day with the assurance that You are with me and reign over all. I commit to seeking You and glorifying You in all that I do. In Your name, I pray, Amen.
