“…and when James and Cephas [Peter] and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.” – Galatians 2:9 (ESV)
Good morning fellow disciples.
Galatians 2:9 highlights a significant moment of affirmation for Barnabas and Paul. During their visit to Jerusalem, the leaders of the church – James, Cephas (Peter), and John, “who seemed to be pillars” – recognized the grace of God at work in Paul and Barnabas’ ministry to the Gentiles. As a result, they extended to them the “right hand of fellowship,” a gesture of acceptance, partnership, and mutual support. This formal recognition validated their calling and affirmed their authority to minister to the Gentiles, while the Jerusalem leaders focused on the Jewish people. This passage underscores the importance of seeking and receiving affirmation from respected leaders within the body of Christ.
As a disciple, you are called to seek God’s guidance and affirmation in your calling and your ministry. Barnabas’ example reminds you that it’s wise to seek counsel from trusted mentors, to be accountable to spiritual leaders, and to receive confirmation from those who have a proven track record of faithfulness and discernment. While ultimately your calling comes from God, the affirmation of others can provide encouragement, validation, and a sense of belonging within the larger body of Christ.
This week, identify someone in your life who serves as a spiritual mentor or leader. Seek their counsel, their wisdom, and their affirmation regarding your calling and your ministry. Be open to receiving their feedback and to adjusting your approach as needed.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, lead me to wise and godly mentors who can help me to discern Your will for my life and to confirm my calling. Give me a humble and teachable spirit, so that I may receive their counsel with grace and apply it with wisdom. Strengthen my relationships with those who can provide accountability, support, and encouragement on my journey of faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
