When they came to the other side, Elijah said to Elisha, “Tell me what I can do for you before I am taken away.” And Elisha replied, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit and become your successor.”
2 Kings 2:9 NLT
Good morning fellow disciples.
Petition: something asked or requested, an earnest request.
A disciple is someone who accepts and helps to spread the teachings of a famous person.
Elisha was Elijah’s disciple. He was one of many disciples, but he was the one who the Lord had told Elijah to anoint as his successor. In this passage we see the master asking the disciple what he desired of him before he was taken away.
Elisha replied, “Please let me inherit a double share of your spirit and become your successor.”
We tend to focus on Elisha’s request for a double portion of the spirit that was on Elijah, because we already knew from a previous passage that God’s choice for Elijah’s successor was Elisha.
Here we see the disciple petitioning his master to be his successor. Elisha ASKED to be the successor!
Are you in a position where you are understudying someone, where you are seen as a successor to your boss, or where you desire to take over from your superior?
Have you petitioned your master to become his successor?
Before you do this, let us pray.
Prayer: Father God, if it is Your will for me to succeed my master, please let me know. With Your permission I will now petition my master to be his successor. Amen.
