As Jesus was walking by the shore of the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon [Peter] and Simon’s brother, Andrew, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me [as My disciples, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk], and I will make you fishers of men.”
Mark 1:16-17 AMP
Good morning fellow disciples.
Conversation is defined as: “a talk, especially an informal one, between two or more people, in which news and ideas are exchanged.”
What was the idea that was exchanged in this discourse between Jesus and the brothers Peter and Andrew?
In Mark’s recollection of this encounter we do not see the details, but in Luke chapter 5 we see that Jesus was seated on one of their boats teaching. After finishing, He told them to go fishing and they miraculously caught a large amount of fish. It was then that Peter told Jesus to get away from him because he Peter was a sinful man. Jesus then said to him, “have no fear, from now on you will be catching men.”
They knew who Jesus was. They understood that He wanted them to be His disciples. They understood that they would have to leave their current life behind in order to follow Him and to learn how to live like Him.
What was their response?
Immediately they left their nets and followed Him [becoming His disciples, believing and trusting in Him and following His example].
Mark 1:18 AMP
Do you know who Jesus is?
Do you know what He is asking you to do?
Can you see yourself as Peter in this conversation? Like Peter, Jesus is calling you to be His disciple. Do you understand that you will have to answer or reject that call?
What will you choose to do?
Prayer: Lord Jesus I know who You are. I understand that You are calling me to be Your disciple, to follow You and accept You as my Master and Teacher, and walking the same path of life that You walk.
I will become Your disciple, believing and trusting in You and following Your example. Thank You for choosing me! I love you Lord, and I will serve you all my life. Amen.
Jesus is still calling people to follow him.
