Navigating Conflict- Barnabas’ Pursuit of Unity and Truth

June 18, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“And after Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and debate with them [the Judaizers from Judea], Paul and Barnabas and some of the others were appointed to go up to Jerusalem to the apostles and the elders about this question.” – Acts 15:2 (ESV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

Acts 15:2 reveals the emergence of a significant theological conflict in the early church and Barnabas’ role in seeking resolution. When certain individuals from Judea began teaching that Gentile believers needed to be circumcised to be saved, Paul and Barnabas engaged in “no small dissension and debate” with them. Recognizing the importance of addressing this issue, the church appointed Paul and Barnabas to travel to Jerusalem to consult with the apostles and elders. This passage highlights Barnabas’ commitment to upholding sound doctrine, his willingness to engage in difficult conversations, and his dedication to maintaining unity within the body of Christ.

As a disciple, you may encounter disagreements, conflicts, or even divisions within your church or community. Barnabas’ example reminds you to approach such situations with humility, grace, and a commitment to seeking the truth. You are empowered to engage in respectful dialogue, to listen to different perspectives, and to work towards reconciliation and unity, all the while redirecting your focus to God.

This week, if you are aware of a conflict or disagreement within your church or community, consider how you can help to bring about resolution. Pray for wisdom and discernment, and be willing to engage in respectful dialogue with those who hold different views. Focus on finding common ground and on upholding the core truths of the Gospel.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, grant me wisdom, humility, and grace as I navigate conflicts and disagreements. Help me to engage in respectful dialogue, to listen to different perspectives, and to seek unity within the body of Christ. May my words and actions be guided by Your love, Your truth, and Your desire for reconciliation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
