Memorial Song

By Andrew Williams

Then David composed a funeral song for Saul and Jonathan,
2 Samuel 1:17 NLT

Good morning fellow disciples.

One of the highlights of a funeral service is the eulogy. Eulogy is a speech or piece of writing that praises someone or something highly, especially a tribute to someone who has just died.

During a funeral service, songs are also sung. These songs are usually the favorites of the deceased. You can also rewrite a song to honor the deceased, like Elton John did for Princess Diana with the song ‘Candle in the Wind’.

In 2 Samuel 1, David composed a funeral song for both Saul and Jonathan. This song honored and eulogized both men.

How do you memorialize in words those whom you love?

Do you write a eulogy, poem, book, citation, or a song?

As you think about honoring the ones that you love, consider memorializing their good deeds in song.

Prayer: Father God, we thank you for our loved ones. Some have gone ahead of us and others are still with us. As we think of them, we can say:

“Precious mem’ries, how they linger,
How they ever flood my soul;
In the stillness of the midnight,
Precious, sacred scenes unfold.”

Lord Jesus, we thank You for redeeming us. Because of You, our Prince of Peace we have eternal life. Thank You for sending Your Holy Spirit to live in us. Because of You we can boldly face any challenge. Because of You we have:

“Blessed quietness, holy quietness
what assurance in my soul!
On the stormy sea speaking peace to me
how the billows cease to roll!”

Thank You Lord! Amen.
