“As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed him.” – Matthew 4:18-20 (NIV)
Good morning fellow disciples.
Matthew 4:18-20 recounts the call of Andrew and his brother Simon Peter. While engaged in their livelihood as fishermen, Jesus approaches them with a simple but life-altering invitation: “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” The immediate response of Andrew and Peter is striking: “At once they left their nets and followed him.” This instantaneous act of obedience reveals their faith, their willingness to leave behind their familiar lives, and their trust in Jesus’ promise.
As a disciple, you are called to respond to Jesus’ invitation with similar obedience. He may not ask you to literally leave your nets, but He may call you to step out of your comfort zone, to relinquish control, and to follow His leading in new and challenging ways. You are empowered to trust in His promise that He will equip you for the task He has called you to do. Just as Andrew and Peter were transformed from fishermen into “fishers of men,” Jesus can transform your skills, talents, and passions into tools for His Kingdom.
This week, prayerfully consider what “nets” Jesus might be calling you to leave behind. Are there habits, relationships, or possessions that are hindering your ability to fully follow Him? Ask the Holy Spirit to give you the courage to step out in faith and to embrace the new direction He is leading you.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I surrender my life to You and I ask for the courage to follow You wherever You may lead. Show me the “nets” that are holding me back from fully embracing Your call. Give me the faith to trust in Your promise to equip me for the tasks You have called me to do. Transform my skills, talents, and passions into tools for Your Kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
