“Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working for a living?” – 1 Corinthians 9:6 (ESV)
Good morning fellow disciples.
1 Corinthians 9:6 offers a glimpse into the financial practices of Barnabas and Paul. Writing from Ephesus, likely after their separation, Paul defends his right as an apostle to receive financial support from the churches he serves. However, he also notes that both he and Barnabas sometimes chose not to exercise this right, instead working for a living to support themselves. Paul may be referencing their earlier shared practice or acknowledging Barnabas’ ongoing independent ministry practice. This passage highlights the importance of self-sufficiency and the willingness to serve God without being a burden to others.
As a disciple, you may be called to serve God in ways that require sacrifice and self-denial. Barnabas’ example reminds you that it’s okay to work for a living and to support yourself while also serving God. You are empowered to use your skills, your talents, and your resources to contribute to the Kingdom of God, whether you are financially supported by a church or not.
This week, reflect on how you are using your skills, talents, and resources to serve God. Are you being a responsible steward of your finances? Are you seeking to contribute to the Kingdom of God in practical ways? Consider whether God is calling you to make any changes in your approach to work and ministry.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to be a responsible and faithful steward of the resources that You have entrusted to me. Give me the wisdom to use my skills, my talents, and my finances to serve You and to advance Your Kingdom. May my life be a reflection of Your love, Your grace, and Your generosity. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
