Hovering

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” Genesis 1:1‭-‬2 NKJV

Good morning fellow disciples.

In the beginning, the Spirit of God was present at creation. Elohim created the heavens and the Earth, but when the Earth was created it was formless and void and it was full of darkness. The verse says that “darkness was on the face of the deep and that the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”

Hover means: 1. to move to and fro near a place: fluctuate around a given point,
2. to position over something without selecting it.

The first mention of the Spirit of God in the Bible shows Him hovering over dark waters. The question I would ask is why? I know I won’t get an answer for this because the scriptures do not say. However, what we do see is that the Earth was formless at this point and that God possibly was looking at what was there and making a decision as to what to do next.

It is after we see the Holy Spirit in this hovering position that God speaks. When He spoke, things came into being. The rest of Genesis 1 shows us how God created everything. There’s no mention of God the Father or God the Son in the creation story. All we see is God saying ”let us make man in our image.”

Verse 2 tells us that God is Spirit because it says that “the spirit of God was hovering over the waters”. How significant is this statement? We see that even though the Spirit of God was present, it was only when the Word of God was spoken that the changes in creation took place. For me, I see this as being significant.

In the book of Revelation, we hear about the sevenfold Spirit of God that is sent out into all the Earth. This means that the Spirit of God is here, so why don’t we see things happening in a godly way. In my mind, the Earth is now full of sin and it’s like the Earth at the beginning that was full of darkness, and the Spirit of God is hovering. He will not act without the word of God being spoken.

You might now be thinking that God should speak, but we have the word of God right here in our Bibles. The Earth is a domain of humans and God will not act here without a human sanctioning His actions, therefore we have to speak His words or invite Him to act here.

What have you been doing? Many of us have been ignoring the words of God and not utilizing them for Him to act in this world. Is your life filled with darkness? Is your family filled with darkness? Is your community filled with darkness?

The spirit of God is hovering over your situation, and all you need to do now is speak the word of God for changes to occur. Just like in the creation story God’s words brought about specific changes. What changes are you looking for in your life? The words of God in Scripture are there to bring about that change. All you have to do is form a relationship with God and in faith speak the words over your situation for God to begin acting. Trust God, place your faith in Him, and speak His word over your situation so that He will stop hovering, and begin to act in your life.


Prayer: Holy Spirit I know that You are hovering over my life. I want You to stop moving to and fro around me and to come and live within me. I, therefore, repent of all my sins, accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, accept Father God has my God, and invite You to live within me.

I want to see God acting in my life and creating in me things that are pleasing to Him. I speak God’s word over my life and from a place of complete trust and complete faith, I surrender and submit all that I am to You. Make me into the person that God appointed me to be! I ask this in Jesus’ name, amen.
