Gentle Correction- Aquila and Priscilla’s Wisdom in Mentoring

June 30, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“Now a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.” – Acts 18:24-26 (ESV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

Acts 18:24-26 provides a remarkable example of discipleship in action. Aquila and Priscilla, hearing Apollos preach eloquently and accurately about Jesus, recognize both his potential and his limited understanding. Rather than publicly correcting him, they “took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.” This passage highlights the importance of gentle correction, the power of personal mentorship, and the value of humility in both teaching and learning. It’s a testament to their discerning spirit and their desire to build up, and not to tear down. The fact that Priscilla is mentioned first also highlights her important role.

As a disciple, you may encounter opportunities to correct or guide others who are in error or who lack understanding. Aquila and Priscilla’s example reminds you to approach such situations with humility, grace, and a desire to build up, not tear down. You are empowered to offer gentle correction, to share your wisdom, and to mentor others with love and compassion. Remember to be kind and to not let ego be a barrier.

This week, be attentive to the opportunities God presents to offer guidance or correction to someone in your life. Approach such situations with humility, grace, and a genuine desire to help them grow. Remember to speak the truth in love and to offer your wisdom in a way that is both helpful and encouraging.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to be a wise and discerning disciple, able to recognize opportunities to offer guidance and correction to others. Give me the humility to speak the truth in love and the compassion to build up, not tear down. May my words and actions be a reflection of Your grace and may I lead others to a deeper understanding of Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
