He Is (Week 1: The Foundational Names)
Opening Prayer
Mighty Creator, as we begin this journey to know You more, quiet our hearts and fill us with awe for who You are.
Today’s Scripture (NLT)
Genesis 1:1
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
The very first name by which God reveals Himself in Scripture is Elohim. This is not a small, personal name; it is a majestic title that speaks of strength, power, and sovereignty. It is plural in Hebrew, suggesting majesty and hinting at the Trinity. In the very first verse, it is Elohim—the all-powerful, transcendent God—who speaks existence into being.
This name reveals that God is the source of everything. Before there was anything, there was Elohim. He is the uncreated Creator, the One whose power is so immense that He simply speaks and galaxies are formed. He is not a part of creation; He is above and outside of it, the supreme authority over all things. To know God as Elohim is to stand in awe of His infinite power and creative genius.
When you look at the complexity of a single cell, the vastness of the cosmos, or the beauty of a sunset, you are seeing the handiwork of Elohim. He is the God who brings order out of chaos and life out of nothingness. This is the foundation of who our God is: the Mighty One to whom nothing is impossible.
Disciple’s Life Tip: Today, interact with God as Elohim. Take a moment to go outside or look out a window. Find one thing in creation—a tree, a cloud, a bird—and thank Elohim for His creative power and intricate design.
Closing Prayer: Elohim, Mighty Creator, we worship You. All of creation declares Your glory. Help us to live in the confidence that the One who created the universe holds our lives in His hands. Amen.
