Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” (New Living Translation).
Good morning fellow disciples.
Let us contemplate the profound liberation offered in Galatians 2:20. This isn’t a mere statement of faith; it’s a powerful declaration of spiritual transformation, a pathway to deliverance from the tyranny of self.
Before we explore this verse, let’s define deliverance in this unique context. Deliverance from self isn’t simply self-improvement or increased self-awareness; it’s a radical spiritual transformation, a complete release from the self-centeredness, pride, and the pursuit of self-gratification that dominate the human heart. It’s a transition from a life governed by the ego to one empowered by the Holy Spirit, a life characterized by humility, selflessness, and a deep intimacy with God. It’s a death of the old self and the resurrection of a new self, rooted in Christ. It’s freedom from the prison of self and the empowering embrace of God’s love and grace.
The verse begins with a powerful declaration: “I have been crucified with Christ…” This isn’t a literal crucifixion; it’s a metaphorical death of the old self—the self-centered, prideful, and self-seeking nature that separates us from God. This “crucifixion” represents a complete surrender of our will to Christ, a willingness to die to our own desires and ambitions, and a commitment to living a life wholly dedicated to Him. It’s a process of letting go of our self-reliance and embracing our dependence on God.
The verse continues, “…and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” This is not a passive statement; it’s an active reality. When we die to self, we make space for Christ to live within us, empowering us to live a life that reflects His character, His love, and His grace. It’s not about suppressing our emotions or denying our humanity; it’s about allowing Christ to transform our hearts and minds, guiding our thoughts, feelings, and actions. It’s a life lived not for our own glory but for His.
Empowerment from the Verse: This verse empowers us to embrace a life of radical selflessness, empowered by the indwelling presence of Christ. It reminds us that we are not defined by our own strengths or weaknesses but by the life of Christ within us. It’s a call to live authentically, surrendering our own desires to His will and allowing His love to transform us from the inside out.
Your Task: Today, I challenge you to reflect on areas of your life where self-reliance and self-seeking still hold sway. Pray for God’s help in identifying these areas and surrender them to Him. Seek to live each day guided by the Holy Spirit, allowing Christ’s love to shape your thoughts, words, and actions. Remember, dying to self is not a loss; it’s a liberation—a pathway to true freedom and a life lived in accordance with God’s perfect plan.
Prayer: Father God, we come before You acknowledging our struggles with self-reliance and self-seeking. Help us to die to self, surrendering our will to Yours. Empower us to live lives that reflect Christ’s love, grace, and humility. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, and guide us in every aspect of our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
