Deceived by Pride

By Andrew Williams – August 24,2021

The pride of your heart has deceived you, You who dwell in the clefts of the rock, Whose habitation is high; You who say in your heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’ Obadiah 1:3 NKJV

Good morning fellow disciples.

Today we see that a part of the reason for God’s judgement on Edom was their pride. Edom was situated in the hills and by virtue of their location it was difficult for them to be attacked successfully. They prided themselves in this but when God makes a decree, it must come to pass.

I wonder, did they speak this out loud? When we look closely at this verse it says, “You who say in your heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?” Was it only a thought? Whatever it was, God heard and He pronounced judgement on Edom.

Are you proud like Edom in your thoughts or actions? Do you think that you are untouchable in certain areas of your life? Let me remind you of what God says about pride and deception, and ask you to reconsider your ways:

Pride comes before destruction, and an arrogant spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18 HCSB

Don’t be deceived: God is not mocked. For whatever a man sows he will also reap, because the one who sows to his flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit.” Galatians 6:7‭-‬8 HCSB

Prayer: Father God we pause now to examine ourselves, and ask You to reveal to us the pride in us, and anything else that would cause us to be deceived. Father God we humble ourselves before You and ask You to forgive us as we repent of our prideful thoughts and actions. We ask You Lord God to reveal Your truth to us so that we can begin to think correctly and to walk wisely in Your presence.

Teach us Your ways Lord and instill in us the desire to serve You wholeheartedly I pray, in Jesus’ Name, amen.
