Confronting Greed- Silas’ Steadfastness Amidst Persecution

July 9, 2025

“But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers.” – Acts 16:19 (ESV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

Acts 16:19 reveals the harsh reality of the opposition that Paul and Silas faced during their missionary journey. After Paul cast out a spirit of divination from a slave girl, her owners, realizing that their source of income was gone, seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace before the authorities. This verse underscores the power of the Gospel to challenge unjust systems and to expose the greed and self-interest that often drive persecution.

As a disciple, you may face opposition or persecution when you stand for truth and justice, especially when it challenges the status quo or threatens the financial interests of others. Silas’ example reminds you to remain steadfast in your commitment to Christ, even when it comes at a personal cost. You are empowered to speak truth to power, to defend the vulnerable, and to trust that God will ultimately vindicate those who are faithful to Him.

This week, consider how you can stand for truth and justice in your own sphere of influence. Identify any areas where you see injustice or oppression, and prayerfully consider how you can use your voice, your resources, or your actions to make a difference. Be prepared to face opposition, but trust that God will give you the strength to persevere.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, give me the courage to stand for truth and justice, even when it’s difficult or unpopular. Empower me to speak truth to power, to defend the vulnerable, and to challenge unjust systems. Help me to trust in your protection and to remain steadfast in my commitment to you, regardless of the cost. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
