Chosen for Purpose- Philip’s Selection and Divine Designation

May 16, 2025

By Andrew Williams

“Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew,” – Luke 6:14 (NIV)

Good morning fellow disciples.

Luke 6:14 simply includes Philip’s name in the list of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus. The significance of this verse lies in the preceding context: Jesus spent the entire night in prayer before selecting these men. This highlights that Philip was chosen not by chance or human whim, but through divine discernment and purposeful intention. It also establishes that his designation as an apostle was rooted in prayerful consideration and a connection to God.

As a disciple, you may sometimes question your calling, your abilities, or your worthiness to serve God. Philip’s inclusion in this list reminds you that you are chosen by God, not because of your own merits, but because of His grace and His purpose for your life. He has a plan for you, and He has equipped you with the gifts, talents, and opportunities you need to fulfill that plan.

This week, take time to reflect on your calling and your purpose in life. Pray for clarity and discernment to understand how God is leading you. Trust that He has chosen you, equipped you, and called you to make a difference in the world.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank you for choosing me to be Your disciple. Help me to understand my calling and my purpose in life. Grant me the wisdom and discernment to follow Your leading and to use my gifts, talents, and opportunities to serve You and to make a difference in the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen
